How can I get an alert to follow up on a PRN medication?

When a PRN or As Needed medication is administered staff will have to follow up and chart the result of that medication. Often times staff get very busy and may forget to enter the results. We have an alert that can be set up to let your staff know they have forgotten this important charting. Let's take a look at how to set up this alert. 

  1. The first step is to go into the PRN medication and edit the effectiveness time
  2. Enter in the number of hours allowed before the alert is triggered. 
  3. If you set 1 hour this means 1 hour after it was charted as administered it's looking for the result. If no result has been entered it will trigger the alert.
  4. The next step is to set up the alert.
  5. Go into the Alert Manager and filter by Medication and then Missing Result.
  6. Next select PRN Effective/Missed Result and click on Add Workflow Rule
  7. Complete the sections for the rule and Save
  8. Make sure to Enable the rule
  9. Notify your staff if you have added them to this rule and show them how to check alerts in My Work.

Keep in my that this alert will only be triggered if the effectiveness time is set in each PRN medication.
